The first scriptural account of calling on the name of the Lord can be found as early as Genesis 3, with the third generation of mankind. And to Seth, to him also a son was born; and he called his name Enosh. Then men began to call upon the name of the Lord (Gen. 4:26). In Hebrew, the name Enosh is quite meaningful. It means frail, mortal. Through his experience of human life, Seth came to realize mans inherent weakness. He therefore named his son Enosh, indicating that man is weak, frail, and mortal. As for ourselves, so long as we have no serious problems in our lives we may consider ourselves quite strong and capable. But when trouble comes, the weakness of our human life becomes evident; at such times, we begin to call upon the name of the Lord. The Bible provides a clear, detailed record of many of the Lords seekers who called on Him: CHART (See how many times calling on the Lord is mentioned in the Old and New Testaments) |
